Signs of a once bustling town

Pocahontas was a big, booming town at the turn of the century, what with hundreds of men working in the coal mines. The town was full of boarding houses and hotels for the men to stay at, like these abandoned buildings above.
Pocahontas Cemetery

Thousands are buried in the cemetery in Pocahontas. In fact, the cemetery takes up an entire hill on the outskirts of town. It is unmistakable as you enter town. Just a reminder as to the dangers involved in coal mining.

The railroad was second only to coal as the major employer in the area. Above right is a 1948 tunnel.
